Located in the heart of Minneapolis\, it brings together a diverse collection of plants in woodland\, wetland\, and meadow habitats in just 18 acres. This unique garden started by Eloise (and others) has been carefully cultivated over 120 years by many hands into the wondrous place it is today. \nThe Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden Florilegium captures the intimate details of the beautiful wild plants of this garden. A florilegium is a compendium of illustrations of the plants in a particular place\, as a visual and historical record. Created by artists of the Minnesota School of Botanical Art\, the project reclaims a centuries old form to highlight a special\, public place that’s important today. It carries on a tradition of botanical illustration that brings together art and science to create accurate\, yet expressive\, depictions of living plants. \nThis all-ages exhibition centers on the 111 watercolors of the florilegium. At Cedar Lake Point Beach\, we’ll pull over onto the shore for a story time led by children’s bookstore Wild Rumpus staff. \nJoining us for this paddle is beloved children’s author Molly Beth Griffin! Molly is the author of many picture books including Ten Beautiful Things\, Just Us\, Rhoda’s Rock Hunt\, Rings of Heartwood: Poems on Growing\, and Far\, Far Away. She lives in South Minneapolis with her partner and their two children\, where she enjoys walking around lakes\, taking photos of birds\, eating pastries\, watching mysteries\, and waiting for the mail. \nWHO THIS IS FOR\n\nThis event is perfect for families with children weighing 30 pounds and up. All children must be accompanied by an adult guardian.\nNo canoeing experience is necessary—Wilderness Inquiry provides all equipment and basic instruction. DESCRIPTION:The Jam Lab is a free monthly musical improvisation workshop for all ages and skill levels. Each session will feature diverse practices aimed at inviting collaborative musical creativity. We’ll play improv games to explore the varied forms music takes\, sit in deep listening to sound and silence\, talk about our personal experiences with music\, improvise freely\, and compose musical pieces based on shared psychology as well as chance. \nThe musical improv “games” are participatory exercises with minimal prompts that serve as catalysts for collaborative improvisation. In a freeform manner\, we’ll decide on musical rules for each exercise\, then attempt to perform them in sound. These are experiments with no set outcome; the rules will chart a direction to move toward\, then we’ll see where the improv takes us. A wealth of possibilities for inspiration will be provided: cards containing different forms and techniques\, dice and timers to select parameters\, loop pedals and drum machines to cast sonic palettes\, and others. \nDrawing on free improv music traditions\, these sessions will focus on personal expression and experimentation\, as opposed to technical skill and cultural knowledge. Inclusive free play attitudes of “yes and” and “any sound could be music” will be the guiding principles. People of all musical backgrounds are encouraged to participate. Bring the whole crew\, tiny humans included.
