Cantatas of the Early Baroque

Experience the birth of the Italian Baroque with an intimate evening of 17th-century Roman chamber cantatas. Masters Giacomo Carissimi and Luigi Rossi transformed vocal music by combining dramatic storytelling, expressive recitatives, and lyrical melodies—setting the stage for generations of vocal composition to come.

Music of Giacomo Carissimi and Luigi Rossi

Giacomo Carissimi (1605–1674): Renowned for his expressive nuance and mastery of the early chamber cantata, including dramatic laments like Lamento di Maria Stuarda.

Luigi Rossi (1597–1653): A prolific master of vocal writing, celebrated for his arie di più parti and emotive sacred cantatas like O grotta, o speco, o sasso.
