My Husband IS NOT My Best Friend

I adore my husband, I do. We met almost a decade ago and I’ll give him plenty credit that he has played a significant role when it comes down to the person (mother, partner, friend, critic, newly-formed sports enthusiast) I am today. I count my many blessings and all the stars in the sky that lead me to him, I honor him and I thank him for choosing, for picking me to be his wife. His wife – because that’s exactly what I am.

What am I getting at? Well, it’s just this whole “Happy birthday/anniversary to my best friend” business I’m constantly seeing. I’m talking to you, you with the newly engaged status announcing you just said “Yes!” to your best friend. And I’m also talking to you, whose husband just got that fat promotion and you’re so proud of your best friend and all his accomplishments… I find myself slightly confused as I’m all of the sudden comparing this 5’5″ blonde female who I’ve played countless games of Girl Talk with to my handsome 5’9″ and bald husband who fathers my children. There’s a huge difference here… My husband is NOT my best friend, and here’s why:

1. Group texts are alive and well with my best friends.

2. Hair, makeup, dresses and bathroom selfies. Who else has the patience or interest in where your new wardrobe/make up came from? Does my husband really want to know what goes on or is said in the women’s bathroom? Does he truly understand the effort and amazing feels put into getting this Mom out of the house? No honey, he doesn’t.

3. We have each others back on the best and worst days.

4. We’re best friends with the same people. You migrate towards those who lift you up and those who know when to defend you when you try and explain to your husband you just weren’t meant to cook – and this is actually REALLY normal. This explains why my girls from high school love my girls from college and my girls from college love my girls I met at preschool pick-up line and so forth. This is when the kids now days would use #squadgoals.

5. We like love to dance. And sometimes it’s not very clean.

6. They become family. When you marry someone, you’re in it for the full package… I’m talking about the in-laws, people! I feel fortunate to have married a man close with his family and to have gained two sisters whom I now couldn’t see my days without.

7. We cry when another falls in love with someone they (and we) really love.

8. And if you’re really lucky, you cry some more.

9. We cheers to Motherhood on Mother’s Day. There’s nothing else that knows how to make me feel like an absolute queen on Mother’s Day than a big high-five from my fellow Mommy friends themselves – sometimes complete with a big glass of wine at the end of the night, like – a really big glass of wine.

10. We’re hundreds and even thousands of miles apart, but reuniting is always good.

It’s ohh so good.

And this is why personally, I believe any man is lucky to come in after my best friends.
