Fall Scouting Adventure: Why a New School Year Is the Perfect Time to Join
Fall brings a fresh start for a lot of families. New teachers, new schedules, new activities to figure out. If you’ve been thinking about Scouting for your child, this is a good season to make the leap. Packs and troops kick off their year in the fall, which makes it an easy time for new families to jump in alongside everyone else.
Scouting Fits Wherever Your Family Is
Northern Star Scouting has a program for kids from kindergarten all the way through young adulthood. Cub Scouts is for kids ages 5 to 10 and gets the whole family involved through small groups called packs. Scouts BSA picks up from there for ages 11 to 18, giving older kids more independence and leadership opportunities as they take on bigger challenges. For older teens, Venturing offers more independence and adventure, while Exploring lets teens ages 14 to 21 get hands-on experience in a career field they’re curious about, from healthcare to law enforcement to the trades.
Every program is built around the same idea. Kids learn by doing, and they grow through hands-on challenges, not lectures.
What Scouting Actually Looks Like
For younger kids, that might mean a den meeting after school once or twice a month, working on a project with a small group of friends their age. For older kids, it might mean planning a weekend campout with their troop, learning to navigate with a map and compass, or taking the lead on a service project in their community. Along the way, kids build real skills like problem-solving, teamwork, and independence, the kind that carry over into schoolwork, friendships, and everyday life.

Scouting isn’t just something kids do on their own. Especially in the younger programs, parents and caregivers are part of the experience too, whether that’s attending a pack meeting, helping out at an event, or just being there for the campout. From there, it’s a short application and a chance to ask any questions before getting started. New Cub Scouts who register with Northern Star Scouting by September 30 get a free spot at Fall Day Camp, running weekends in October at locations across Minnesota, including one near Hudson, Wisconsin. It’s a low-pressure way for kids to try camp activities like archery and outdoor games right after joining, no extra cost involved.
