Family Fun Ideas for Spring and Summer

I am a huge Minnesota fan, even in the negative 2-degree weather and snow through April. I think the best part of springtime in Minnesota is all the lakes we can walk around and the outdoor activities we get to enjoy. I know the beaches are not like they are in Florida, but Minnesota has a uniqueness that offers more than laying on a beach.

One of my favorite lakes to walk around is Lake Harriet. They have a band shell where they offer movies, orchestras, bands, and many other forms of entertainment. I like to check out the ice cream shop and food vendors at the end of my walk. Afterward, we join the crowds with fun activities at the band shell.

Lake Harriet is very close to Bde Maka Ska (previously Lake Calhoun), which is the largest lake in Minneapolis. Bde Maka Ska is open and beautiful and surrounded by the most beautiful homes. There are activities like kayaking and canoeing, fishing docks, walking paths, and family bikes available. This is a perfect place if you just want to get out of the house with your family and enjoy the weather.

Last Summer, my little family decided to try activities that keep us healthy and in shape. We purchased a bike baby carrier and started biking. It is a great way to stay active and have fun exploring our neighborhood and local coffee shops.

Another idea to get outside and active with your friends and family is to host a picnic in the park. Minnesota has so many great parks. Many of them have grills, walking trails, play-sets, sand volleyball, free splash pads, and many other amenities to keep the whole family entertained. We took our son when he was one last year to quite a few. He absolutely loved playing in the water. This activity was fun for all ages as there were kids aged up to the teens playing. Our favorites have been at the Ames Center in Burnsville and Madison’s Place Playground in Woodbury.

Unfortunately, in Minnesota, rainy and stormy summer days are inevitable. I have found that one great resource to get out of the house during those days is our county libraries. If you look up your county online, there will be a whole list of family and kid activities for every member to enjoy. Not only is this fun for the family, but it also keeps the kids learning in a safe and friendly environment. You will also get the chance to meet some friends!

Please share your ideas to get up and out of the house this spring and summer below in the comments!
