30th Season Concert: From the Baltic Countryside to Dumbarton Oaks | MacPhail Center for Music

Marking 30 years of chamber music in the Twin Cities, Bakken Ensemble’s anniversary season honors our tradition of adventurous programming and community connection. This season brings together celebrated artists and inquisitive listeners for performances that are both intimate and engaging.
The season opens with a vibrant journey through musical landscapes and shifting sound worlds. We begin with tunes from the Polish and Lithuanian countryside, explore the garden of Dumbarton Oaks and end with a grand Russian masterwork.
From Bacewicz’s lively folk rhythms and Schumann’s tender Romantic lyricism to Shaw’s modern architectural textures and Taneyev’s sweeping Russian grandeur, each work reveals a unique musical voice that speaks across time and place.
Grażyna Bacewicz: Violin Duets on Folk Themes
Robert Schuman: Fantasy Pieces Op. 73 for Cello and Piano
Caroline Shaw: Plan and Elevation for String Quartet
Sergey Taneyev: Piano Quintet in g minor, Op. 30
Featuring guest artists Rui Du, violin; Kyu-Young Kim, viola; and Hanna Hyunjung Kim, piano.
