I am a Twin Cities Family: Elizabeth Ries

Elizabeth was born in Cambridge, Minnesota but graduated from Apple Valley High School. After receiving her B.A. in journalism and political science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, she jumped into TV news in Duluth, Minnesota. She made her way back to the Twin Cities reporting for 5 Eyewitness News before making the move to “Twin Cities Live” in June 2009.

Elizabeth is a self-diagnosed “Food Network” addict.  Cooking and healthy eating are two of her greatest passions.  She grows as much of her own food as possible in her ever-expanding garden and raises chickens in her south Minneapolis backyard.  Elizabeth has her own blog called Home to Homestead that focuses on urban farming.

Newlyweds Elizabeth and Jay welcomed Baby Bernadette in January 2015.

If we peeked in your purse right now, what would we find? Wallet, keys, 15 lip products, Grass Run Farms beef sticks, Larabars, water bottle and a checkbook. I think I’m the only person in the world who still carries a checkbook!

Why do you call the Twin Cities home? I was born and raised in the Twin Cities, and I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else. Okay, except maybe on a vineyard in Sonoma. I love everything about the Twin Cities. Even the harsh winters. But most importantly, I love living so close to both my and my husband’s families.

What’s been the greatest joy of motherhood? The greatest joy is seeing the combination of me and my husband in one little person! We didn’t find out our baby’s gender before she was born, so I still look at her and say, “I can’t believe it was you in there the entire time!”

What’s been the greatest challenge of motherhood? The greatest challenge has also ended up being a wonderful joy. Before I became Bernie’s mother, I ran my life at a million miles an hour all the time. Having Bernie forced me to slow down and gave me incredible clarity when it comes to prioritizing my life. I was really nervous about that transition but it’s ended up being the best thing for me.

How do you hope your life influences and/or inspires other women? I would love to see all women give ourselves a break. I think we are so hard on ourselves. We’re our own worst critics. It’s time to stop putting so much pressure on ourselves. I mess up on TV. I’m not a size zero. My hair is sometimes a mess. I hope people see me and think, it’s okay to be imperfect.

Shopping (for YOU!): This is going to sound really nerdy, but my favorite store is the Seward Co-op. Grocery stores make me relaxed and happy.
