The Way to a Mama’s Heart: A Poem
When your friend has a baby, there’s a secret you should know,
She’s hormonal, saggy, and paranoid, and long visits are “No No.”
And when she tells you she’s exhausted, she’s not just being extreme.
So please, my friend, BRING COFFEE (with extra whip cream).
And as her mom-journey continues, so will her coffee love affair
Like Elsa and that stupid song, they’ll be an inseparable pair.
It will give her strength to take on the day, every tantrum, poop-splosion, and fart.
Coffee is her lifeblood, the fastest way straight to her heart.
That deep dark brown abyss, will have the power to change her day
From crying in the closet, to running the PTA.
She’ll take it black or frothy, that bittersweet caffeine kiss
Because she depends on it for sanity, when her day looks something like this…
Every morning when she wakes, to the sound of baby cries
She rolls out of bed and struggles to open her mascara-crusted eyes.
“It’s only 4 am” she shreaks, “the world is coming to an end!”
So, please, my dear, BRING COFFEE, and you’ll be her new best friend.
By 9 AM she’s done it all, from laundry to nursery rhymes
She’s cooked and cleaned and stacked, and read the same book seven times.
So when she looks at the clock and discovers, there’s still 8 more hours to go
She screams and grabs the keys, desperate for a cuppa’ jo.
She shuttles her kids to Target, and throws ‘em in the cart
Then heads straight to the Starbucks, to fill her mommy heart.
With coffee in her veins, she’s willing to take on the tantrums and screams
Because, my friend, IT’S COFFEE (with extra whip cream).
By noon she feels a sense of hope, because its coming soon
That sweet fleeting silence of naptime, to fill her afternoon.
She’ll sip what’s left of her latte in peace, and pray for an extra hour
She’ll catch up on the Kardashians and maybe take a shower.
But by 4 PM, all bets are off, and the messes are insane
She plops her kids in front of the TV, and turns off her mommy brain.
Her clothes are covered in crusty milk, and her stare has gone quite blank
She’s desperate for a pick-me-up to fill her caffeine tank.
If you forget to bring the coffee, don’t worry, my friend, its fine.
But Lord have mercy on any soul who forgets to bring the wine.

Great poem, I loved it. Well done (and yes, I’m a guy)
