Discovering Emerald Lounge
Location: 455 7th Street W., Saint Paul, MN 55102
The West 7th neighborhood is a blend of cultures. History, vibrancy, and pride are crafted beautifully into every home and business within its boundaries. Many homes, like my own, were built in the 1800s, and a stroll through the neighborhood sparks an imagination of what once stood where the Waldman Brewery, Style Society, or Emerald Lounge now stands.

Walking into Emerald Lounge almost feels like stepping into your cool auntie’s living room, but this auntie lets you sit on the furniture. It’s dark and cozy with velvet chaises and chairs. The exposed brick and vents are a nod to the working class who worked in the rail yards, breweries, and meat-packing plants before West 7th became the trendy destination it is today. All are welcome at Emerald Lounge, whether you are in your work boots, or workout clothes, meeting the family, or friends.

Coming out of COVID-19, co-owners Molly and Amanda wanted to create a space they would like to go to without the cover charge or intimidating dress codes. Given their backgrounds in the service industry, Molly and Amanda built a space where industry folks felt seen and part of the family. On a wall above a booth, you will find the baby photos of the bartenders, photos of parents and siblings, and a photo of Molly and Amanda, sitting in that same spot just a few years ago.

As a Minnesota transplant, Emerald Lounge has become my second home. Patrick, one of the bartenders, knows that by Friday, I either need an “upper” or a 455, their take on an espresso martini or their classic martini du jour. If you prefer a drink with a snack, I recommend the Huntress served with anchovy and pickled onion. Yum! The Captain Jack Sparrow drink is a perfect summer NA option, and there are plenty of wines and beers for your choosing.

If you go to Emerald and plan to stay awhile, you must try Bill’s Chips & Dips or an order of wings. The Shrimp and Grits are a big bowl of comfort, and the Thai Red Curry Mussels are jam-packed with flavor. Be sure to ask for extra bread to soak up the broth. Finally, you can never go wrong with one of their excellent creamy pastas. Need more suggestions? Here are Molly and Amanda’s favorites:

Emerald Lounge is about a 15-minute drive from MSP airport or a 5-minute drive from downtown. You could walk to the Xcel Center for a show or sporting event after dinner, or close down Emerald for the evening after a night with loved ones. Don’t have a babysitter? Don’t worry! Your tiny dates are welcome to accompany you for dinner and may also love the soft seating options. After dinner, you can walk across the street to Bad Weather Brewing to play board games or stroll through High Bridge or Irvine Park.

Beware, once you go to Emerald, you’ll keep going back. When you do return, tell them Korinne sent you, or find me at the bar.
