The older my kids get, the more I look for opportunities to keep them off of their phones and social media. Its seems the lure of the phone is almost magnetic, they just can’t put it down. And if I am honest with myself, I spend more time on my phone than I would like to admit so when I find an activity that our whole family enjoys, I feel like I have hit the jackpot.
We are a little late to the game, but lately our family has been enjoying downhill skiing together. It truly is the perfect way to spend a weekend together: enjoying breathtaking mountain top scenery, experiencing exhilarating runs down the mountain, then riding back up the mountain with at least five minutes of uninterrupted time together. Bonus? Sometimes it’s so cold your kids are forced to cuddle with you to stay warm.
There are several places around the Twin Cities to ski, but there is something special about getting away, going a short, manageable distance that makes it feel like you are truly on vacation. Our family recently spent a lovely weekend at Mont du Lac Resort in Superior, Wisconsin. From the moment we arrived, we were greeted with cheery staff who were more than accommodating for these beginner skiers. They made us feel at ease with the whole process. (Have you ever tried to get ski boots on a kid? It isn’t necessarily one of my favorite activities.)
The highlight of our weekend was taking ski lessons. The ski school staff were SO friendly and made us all feel welcome. They accompanied my son on his first trip up the mountain because he was scared of getting off the chair lift at the right time. They were so encouraging and accommodating.
The atmosphere at Mont du Lac is very family friendly. The slopes are big enough to be challenging, but intimate enough that I felt safe letting my kids ski on their own. I may have met another mom doing the same thing, and together we watched our kids tackle the slopes from the cozy comforts of the chalet. The weather outside may have been frigid cold, but it was heartwarming to watch our kids have wild, screen-free fun.
