I am a Twin Cities Family: Metra Farrari

Today’s I am a Twin Cities Family feature is all about Metra Farrari!

“I’ll let you guess: My eyebrows are overgrown yet conspicuously thin from years of overplucking. I just googled “how to get slime out of carpet” and absently wondered if it’s too early to order a pumpkin spice latte. Answer: I am a millennial mom! I have a four-year-old daughter, three-year-old twin boys, and a 9-week-old debut novel that was released in June called All The Blues Come Through. In my copious spare time over since having three children, I honed my skills as a naptime novelist, lovingly crafting a book targeted toward adult millennials who enjoy binge-reading chick-lit with a dash of mythology.”

What do you love about calling the Twin Cities home?

I grew up in Eagan, attended UW Madison, and lived in Chicago for seven years post-college. I randomly met this hunky babe in Chicago and was overjoyed to hear that not only was he also from a suburb of the Twin Cities, but he eventually wanted to move back to be closer to family. Cue the wedding bells, and shortly thereafter, we packed up a U-Haul and made the Armatage neighborhood of SW Minneapolis our home.

If we peeked in your purse right now, what would we find?

A can of sparkling water, a long-forgotten pacifier, a copy of All The Blues Come Through to slip into a Little Library, an outdated phone charger, the Sorcerer’s Stone, emergency fig bars for hangry kids, sassy lip gloss for when I need an oomph and baby wipes for when I need to tone it down. (Notice I didn’t mention my wallet…)

How do you prioritize friendships and connections with other women?

I try to integrate friendships into my everyday life rather than around it. If I’m going to the park, I’ll either shoot a quick text to a neighborhood gal or I’ll strike up a conversation with another mom (easy to spot a fellow legging-clad, coffee-holding, overwhelmed mama with screaming kids in tow). I also try to acknowledge that spending rare moments away from my children will recharge my battery so that I’m a better mom when I’m with them.

Being a mom is no easy task. How do you relax and take care of you?

I have been trying to balance self-care for both my inner and outer self. I make time for therapy for my mental health and acupuncture/cupping/massage for my outer help. For a quick pick-me-up, I’ll buy some fun nail stickers to jazz up the fingers or drag out the hammock for a post-bedtime lollygag.

What’s been your greatest joy in motherhood?

Finding out I rock at being a mom.

What have you found most challenging in your motherhood journey?

Finding out I’m terrible at being a mom. Motherhood is a rollercoaster, and my feelings toward it change by the minute! There are so many high highs and low lows, and I’ve come to recognize that you can’t always strive or expect everything to be joyful.

How do you hope your life influences and/or inspires other women?

I feel like when you’re in college or your early-20’s, you feel like you have to cram in as much fun as possible before you get old (read: 30’s) because it’s allllll downhill from here, what with responsibilities, children, bills, pandemics, etc. But let me tell you, the fun doesn’t have to stop as you grow older and have children! You can still make sky-high goals and achieve them. You can still keep up with the college girls in your spin class. You can still rock a fanny pack from Urban Outfitters. So I hope people see me out there hustling my novel, which was a pie in the sky dream and choose to sprint (or power walk) toward it!
