Beyond the Badges: How Scouting Builds Confidence, Skills, and Friendships

If you’ve ever wondered whether Scouting is the right fit for your child, you’re not alone. It’s a question a lot of Twin Cities families ask, and it’s a fair one. Between busy schedules, school commitments, and everything else on your family’s plate, adding a new activity is a big decision.

Here’s what we can tell you: Scouting is less about earning badges and more about who your child becomes along the way.

It’s About More Than You Think

When most people picture Scouting, they think of campfires and merit badges. And yes, those are part of it. But what Scouts actually walk away with goes much deeper. The experiences Scouts have, from working through a tough challenge with their troop to learning how to navigate in the woods, build confidence, resilience, and a sense of responsibility that shows up in everyday life.

These aren’t skills that just live at a campout. Kids bring them home, to school, and into their friendships.

Is It the Right Fit for My Child?

One of the most common things parents tell us is that they weren’t sure their child would love Scouting, and then were surprised by how much they did.

Scouting works for a wide range of kids because it meets them where they are. Whether your child loves the outdoors, is drawn to STEM, wants to give back to their community, or is just looking for a place to belong, there’s a place for them. Northern Star programs start as young as age 5 with Cub Scouts and continue all the way through age 21 with Venturing and Exploring, so kids can grow with Scouting for years.

What Kids Actually Gain

Here’s a look at what Scouting builds in young people:

  • Leadership and teamwork. Scouts learn to lead and to follow, often within the same meeting. Working together toward a shared goal is built into everything they do.
  • Problem-solving and independence. From planning a camping trip to earning a merit badge, Scouts are regularly challenged to think for themselves and figure things out.
  • Connection to the outdoors. In a world where screens compete for every spare minute, Scouting gives kids a reason to get outside and genuinely enjoy it.
  • Community and friendship. Troops become tight-knit. Many Scouts form friendships that last well beyond their time in the program.
  • A sense of purpose. Service projects and community involvement help kids understand that they can make a real difference, even at a young age.

Not Ready to Commit? Try Camp First.

If your family is curious but not quite ready to sign up for a full year, Discovery Day Camp is a great way to get a feel for what Northern Star has to offer. Open to all kids in Kindergarten through 6th grade, no Scouting membership required, Discovery Day Camp is a week-long program where kids spend their days doing things like archery, climbing, hiking, and crafts alongside new friends. It’s a fun, low-pressure way to see if your child takes to the kind of outdoor, community-centered experience that Scouting is built on.

With May here, now is a great time to secure a spot for this summer. Visit camp.northernstar.org to explore options and register.
