Want a fall outing that’s equal parts fun and meaningful? Owámni: Falling Waters Festival is a free, family-friendly event happening in October. Held at Father Hennepin Bluff Park, the event celebrates Indigenous Minnesota cultures along the Mississippi River.
This event allows families to experience Indigenous music, traditional dance, art, and food in a place with deep Dakota significance. “Owámni” is the Dakota name for the area around St. Anthony Falls, meaning “whirling or falling water.” Browse Indigenous-made art, enjoy live performances, and grab a bite from Indigenous-owned food vendors. As an accredited arboretum with more than 4,000 trees, it’s a surprisingly beautiful place to soak up fall color. Kids can explore at their own pace and follow a Junior Naturalist scavenger hunt. Afterward, create art with natural pigments. There’s even a Living Memory Tree where families can tie a biodegradable ribbon in honor of someone they love. Taylors Falls Scenic Boat Tours

Fall foliage is even better when you can be surrounded by it in the middle of the St. Croix River. Taylors Falls Scenic Boat Tours offer a wonderfully easy way to take in the season’s reds, oranges, and yellows (without asking the kids to hike uphill!). Taylors Falls Scenic Boat Tours is a family business that has offered scenic river cruises since 1906.
Departing from Interstate State Park, these narrated cruises last 45 or 80 minutes. Don’t worry, there is plenty of room to get up and move around during the tour. Along the way, guides point out glacier-carved rock formations, giant potholes, and the famous Old Man of the Dalles. Kids and adults alike will be fascinated by the river’s stories (some of which include tales of dynamite being used along the banks). Take a Scenic Day Trip Down the Great River Road
Some fall road trips are about getting somewhere. The Great River Road is about enjoying the getting there. Follow the Mississippi River south from the Twin Cities. Use this map to wind your way along the river. You will crisscross between Minnesota and Wisconsin as you go. Along the route, find colorful bluffs, scenic overlooks, and charming river towns practically begging for a family detour.
Start in Hastings, continue through Red Wing, and make your way toward Winona. Stop whenever a view catches your eye. This is a route you can do over and over and never have the same experience. Fall is especially beautiful along The Great River Road. The bluffs light up with autumn color and the river adds an extra dose of scenery. Pack snacks, queue up a good playlist (can we recommend a little Noah Kahan?), and leave plenty of room for spontaneous stops. All aboard for a fall adventure with a built-in pumpkin payoff! The Minnesota Transportation Museum’s Pumpkin Express combines the magic of a vintage train ride with all the cozy trimmings of a harvest festival. This is one ride your kids won’t soon forget!
Families board in Osceola, Wisconsin, for a 50-minute round-trip journey through the gorgeous St. Croix River Valley. The train then lets you disembark in Dresser for some fall fun. While the train ride only lasts 25 minutes each way, your ticket includes all-day festival admission in Dresser. Families can enjoy hayrides, games, live music, and food trucks. Every child even gets to choose a pumpkin to take home! Top it off with a festive family selfie at the historic 1884 Dresser Depot. This is one of our favorite unique fall activities in the Twin Cities with kids. We promise, it can easily become an annual family tradition!

Bike along the Luce Line State Trail
Fall was made for gentle bike rides amongst the golden foliage. The Luce Line State Trail lets you trade city streets for dazzling marshlands, woods, and wide-open prairie. Even better, fall’s chilly temps make the ride more comfortable without all those pesky insects.
The trail stretches 63 miles from Plymouth toward Hutchinson, but families can easily choose a shorter section for a fall ride. The paved 9-mile Luce Line Regional Trail is especially approachable for younger riders. You can always extend your ride along the longer state trail, which offers crushed limestone and more adventurous terrain. Along the way, look for wooden bridges, fallen leaves, and local wildlife. Medicine Lake is a great place for a scenic break (depending on your route). You may even catch a glimpse of the Minneapolis skyline near Theodore Wirth Park. It’s an easygoing way to get outside and enjoy the season together.
